The richest woman in Nigeria is Mrs Folorunsho Alakija. She is also the 2nd richest woman in Africa, after Isabel dos Santos.

According to Forbes Africa billionaires ranking of 2020, Folorunsho Alakija is the richest woman in Nigeria and the 20th richest person in Africa.

Although started off in the fashion business, she is currently into oil, real estate and printing business.

Background and Family

Mrs Folorunsho Alakija was born on 15 July, 1951 in Ikorodu, Lagos State to the family of Chief L. A. Ogbara. She attended her nursery education at Our Ladies of Apostles, Lagos from 1955-1958.

Fun fact: Folorunsho Alakija’s father had 52 children from 8 women.

At age 7, she traveled to the United Kingdom to begin a four-year primary education at Dinorben School for Girls in Hafodunos Hall in Llangernyw, Wales between 1959-1963. On returning to Nigeria, she attended Muslim High School, Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria. Afterwards, she returned abroad for her secretarial studies at Pitman’s Central College, London. She also studied fashion design at the American College, London and the Central School of Fashion.¹

Folorunsho Alakija got married in 1976 to Modupe Alakija, who is currently the chairman of Famfa Oil. They both have 4 male children together. The names of their children are: Dele, Ladi, Folarin and Rotimi Alakija – all the four of them are executive directors at Famfa Oil.

According to Forbes, Folorunsho Alakija is worth $1bn (one billion dollar), which places her as the richest woman in Nigeria.

Here are some of the ways she makes her money:

  • Folorunsho Alakija is the vice chairman of Famfa Oil, a Nigerian oil exploration company with a stake in Agbami Oilfield, a prolific offshore asset.²
  • Famfa Oil’s partners include Chevron and Petrobras.²
  • She is the Managing Director of the Rose of Sharon Group which includes Digital reality Print Ltd, a world class printing company.³
  • Dayspring Property Development Company Limited, a real estate company.³

Alakija also run a foundation called “The Rose of Sharon Foundation.” The Rose of Sharon Foundation (RoSF) is a private, voluntary, non-profit, faith based, non-governmental organisation focused on easing the burdens of existence for widows and orphans.³
